Council are rubbish with their rubbish

Taken from Croydon Guardian 17.10.12

An excellent investigation by local Guardian reporter Andy Bloss has revealed that Croydon Council are putting recyclables into landfill bins at their main office (Taberner House). Tracey was invited to make comment on their splash. Apparently, Tracey's comment appears in today's Daily Telegraph!

The day Malcolm met Malcolm

Croydon Town Centre 9th April 2005 - Bernice, Malcolm Wicks, Tony Blair and me!

When Bernice GOLBERG and I decided to send a letter to the local papers (see above and post below), upon hearing the news of Malcolm Wicks' passing, without prompting, we both had recalled the same abiding memory amongst the seemingly numerous encounters with Malcolm Wicks:

In the run up to the 2005 general election, we made life size cut-outs of Malcolm and Tony Blair and took them to every stall we did. Then on one occasion, whilst we were leafleting alongside our eye-catching imagery, we noticed Malcolm was also campaigning in Croydon Town Centre. He definitely knew about our stall. At a previous week his daughter spotted it! Anyway, after biding his time, he eventually strode purposefully towards his "mirror image" and proceeded to straighten its tie, then brush some flecks off the shoulders, and in his own deadpan humour style said, "Well you could have given him a better suit." We all laughed!

Cancer kills Malcolm Wicks, age 65

It was with great sadness that we in the local Green Party heard the news of Malcolm Wicks' death. Although we disagreed on some policy isssues, such as the war in Iraq and the new generation nuclear power stations, he was never less than gracious towards us. As a rival candidate, he was unfailingly polite and always took the time to come and chat to us, whether at a street stall or at a hustings event. Many of the people we have canvassed over the years in North Croydon spoke warmly of Malcolm and appreciated the help he had offered them. He was a hard working Member of Parliament, much loved by his constituents. On behalf of the Croydon Green Party, we would like to send our condolences to his family and friends, and to all the people of the Croydon North constituency.
Bernice Golberg and Shasha Khan, on behalf of the Croydon Green Party

GLA observations on the incinerator application

Stop The Incinerator has seen a letter which details areas where Viridor's ERF application does not comply with London Plan.. Its difficult to gauge at what point the GLA regards the application does conform with the London Plan. Unquestionably, Viridor have some hurdles to get over, such as the Metropolitan Open Land designation, and the Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation status the area holds. In short, it reads like a 'must try harder' letter

Below are the roughly the areas the letter highlights:

• Waste and energy: More information
• Metropolitan Open Land: Further discussion to justify very special cirumstances

• Biodiversity: Further discussion on the effects on nature.
• Tall buildings and design: Further information and discussion regarding views.

• Sustainable development: Further discussion in areas like climate change adaptation. Those of us that read the application, were surprised at the number of documents relating to flood management.

• Air quality: More detail on how the air will be affected

• Transport: Further analysis around how the roads will cope at the time of construction
