Letter from Gordon Ross in paper - In support of food waste collection

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I’m writing in support of the new weekly waste food and recycling collections.

We can’t keep sending waste to landfill, it is expensive, a waste of resources and bad for the environment. Any move to encourage waste reduction and to promote recycling should be applauded. Local authorities that have introduced fortnightly black bin collections have seen their recycling rates jump, as people think twice about throwing everything into the black bin.

The new collection system in Croydon will save £600,000 a year, and this money can be spent providing other vital services to residents instead.

The weekly waste food collections area good idea, turning waste food into compost saves money and is better for the environment. Preventing food waste in the first place would be a better idea, and this needs to be dealt with by food manufacturers and retailers, as well as consumers.

Any new service introduced by the Council is bound to have some teething troubles. If you have any questions about the new scheme, why not get in touch with the Council. When I’ve contacted the waste and recycling people at the Council, I’ve always found them to be helpful and efficient.
